Air Pollution Reduction
Air Emissions Management
SAMSUNG Electronics operates prevention facilities designed to mitigate the impact of air polluting substances (alkali/acid/organic compounds) in order to minimize the environmental impact of emissions from semiconductor manufacturing.
We comply with regulations and operate processing facilities that minimize emissions. Through these efforts, we reduced the emissions of hazardous substances by 62% in 2008 compared to what they were in 2001.
In addition, we are conducting R&D to discover newer and cleaner technologies in order to lower the emission density of air polluting substances and reduce our volume of undesirable emissions. Our internal standard for controlling air pollutant emission density in our production facilities is not more than 30% of the legal limit mandated by Environment Law (Air Quality Preservation Act). In fact, the actual emission density is maintained at less than 20%.

SAMSUNG Electronics inspects and manages in real time the volume of chemical emissions generated from the semiconductor manufacturing process or emissions mixed in the wastewater or solid waste.
In our factory in Hwaseong, we made efforts to improve the air pollutant prevention facility and enhance the manufacturing process. Thanks to this effort, although chemical usage increased 5.4 times from 2001 to 2007, emissions substantially declined by as much as 82.8% during the same period.
* The ratio of emissions against usage dropped from 1.14% in 2001 to 0.03% in 2007.

The Giheung factory of SAMSUNG Electronics signed a voluntary agreement (30/50 Program) for chemical emissions reduction with the Han River Basin Environmental Office on June 25, 2009. The agreement is a program among businesses, civic groups and the government with the goal of reducing chemical emissions by 30% in 3 years and 50% in 5 years from 2007.
Isopropanol (IPA) emissions comprise the largest portion of emissions from the Giheung factory. We plan to cut the IPA emissions by 30% by 2011 and 50% by 2013 from 2007 by optimizing the efficiency of emissions treatment system and improving the manufacturing process.

- Improvement of emissions treatment system: introduce advanced emissions treatment system with higher efficiency
- Reduction of chemical usage: reduce the usage of IPA and ammonia by improving the process and the usage of methanol by recycling waste IPA
- Reduction of waste movement: reduce waste by recycling chemical storages
